DOJ files a 'long overdue' lawsuit against Karen Bass and the LA City Council: 'It concludes with President Trump'

“We don’t back this,” Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass stated earlier this month, while her city dealt with tense interactions involving U.S. immigration and customs enforcement agents.

Interestingly, her condemnation wasn’t aimed at the attacks on federal agents but rather at the enforcement of federal immigration laws.

Amid the turmoil following the Los Angeles riots, Bass continued to express her opposition to ICE. For example, she noted that “All LA communities are grappling with the aftermath of these distressing ICE operations. This isn’t just an attack on a single group; it undermines the very heart of safety and trust,”

The Trump administration responded by filing lawsuits against Bass, the Los Angeles City Council, and the city itself, citing alleged hindrances to the federal enforcement of immigration laws.

Attorney General Pam Bondy remarked, “The Sanctuary policy has driven the recent violence and confusion against law enforcement that we’ve witnessed in Los Angeles. Cities like LA, which prioritize illegal immigrants over American citizens by disregarding federal law, weaken law enforcement on every level — and this will end under President Trump.”

Shortly after Trump was re-elected, a lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. The Los Angeles City Council expressed their intention to resist Americans’ wishes regarding deportations, emphasizing the sanctuary city policy.

The local legislation, titled “Prohibition of Urban Resources for Federal Immigration Enforcement,” prevents the utilization of city resources, such as property and personnel, for immigration enforcement or in collaboration with federal agents.

In a clear statement, the lawsuit argues, “The City of Los Angeles is willfully undermining federal immigration law enforcement.”

Moreover, an “emergency clause” in the ordinance indicates a motive to obstruct future federal administration efforts, while city officials are prohibited from sharing information with federal immigration authorities.

The lawsuit from the Department of Justice claims that LA’s Sanctuary Urban Act violates the Constitution’s supremacy clause, meaning federal law takes precedence over state or local policies.

Government lawyers are requesting the district court to recognize that the city ordinance breaches this supremacy clause and to issue a permanent injunction preventing its enforcement by Los Angeles officials.

Bill Essay, a representative from the Central District of California, emphasized, “This lawsuit seeks to hold Los Angeles accountable for its deliberate obstruction of federal immigration law enforcement.” He further commented on social media that this legal action has been long overdue.

“In straightforward terms, we aim to restore Los Angeles to its previous, safe, and orderly state,” he added.

The legal provisions of the U.S. Constitution bar cities from selectively enforcing federal laws based on their preferences. “The city’s illegal and discriminatory ordinances have contributed to an unsafe environment,” Essay declared.

Despite requests for comments, the Los Angeles Times reported that Bass did not respond promptly. Meanwhile, local officials in LA are mulling over initiating their own legal action against the Trump administration.

This DOJ lawsuit represents a significant step toward fulfilling Trump’s pledged policy goals.

During a speech at Fort Bragg, Trump stated, “Over the decades, Los Angeles has transformed from one of the cleanest and safest cities to a troubled area plagued by cross-border gangs and criminal networks.”

He voiced his concerns candidly, adding, “They might not appreciate it, but I speak clearly. If they don’t act soon, it could be too late.”

In simple terms, Trump indicated that he aims to reclaim Los Angeles, emphasizing a commitment to restoring order and safety in the city.
