Elon Musk Critiques GOP Spending Package
Elon Musk has continued to voice his dissatisfaction regarding what he perceives as insufficient spending cuts within the Republican Party’s “big, beautiful bill.” On his platform, X, he remarked that “we live in a one-party country.”
Musk’s critique of the Republican spending initiative began while he served as a special government employee in the Trump administration, overseeing the Government Efficiency office. After stepping down, he referred to the bill as “filled with pork” and “unpleasantly hateful.” He expressed concern that this legislation might undermine the efforts of his Doge team.
In a post on X, Musk stated, “It’s clear in this bill’s insane spending. This will increase the debt cap by a record $5 trillion. We live in a one-party country. Porky pig party!” He further suggested that it was “time for a new political party that actually cares about people,” while the Senate was deliberating on these spending bills.
On a subsequent post later that evening, Musk reiterated his stance about the United States being dominated by a singular political entity. He wrote, “They are just pretending to be two parties,” while sharing a graphic that illustrates the national debt’s steady rise each year. He ominously warned, “If this insane spending bill passes, the American party will be formed the next day.” He called for an alternative to the current political landscape, referring to it as the “Democrat Uniparty.”
Musk expressed disappointment with the spending bill, claiming it hinders the progress made by his Doge team in reducing federal inefficiencies. However, Senator John Tune of South Dakota countered Musk’s assertions, explaining that much of Musk’s previous work was focused on discretionary spending, which this bill does not address.
Russell Vert, the budget director, pointed out that the “big beautiful bill” cannot legally propose cuts to discretionary spending. While the bill includes provisions for defense and border security spending, it still requires adherence to the Congressional expenditure process for final approval.
After officially departing his role in the Trump administration, Musk shared a past post from Trump where the former president expressed embarrassment about the party extending its debt ceiling. Musk labeled it “sensitive words.”
Despite their disagreements, Trump has referred to Musk as a “great man” during recent interviews, although Musk’s harsh comments about the spending bill have escalated tensions. A few days prior, Musk had called the “big, beautiful bill” a “nasty hatred,” linking Trump to controversies surrounding renewable energy projects. The situation further intensified when Musk made controversial implications involving Trump and Jeffrey Epstein’s scandal in a now-deleted post.
When asked for a statement regarding Musk’s criticisms, the White House highlighted Trump’s remark calling Musk a “great guy.” In a conversation with Fox News, Trump noted, “I’ve never talked to him much, but I think Elon is a great guy and he’s always trying to do well.” However, he also mentioned that Musk had expressed some dissatisfaction, indicating it wasn’t entirely appropriate.
As for why Musk might be upset, Trump suggested that electric vehicle mandates pose significant challenges for him. The discussion revealed a divide in perspectives on electric vehicles, with Trump stating, “not everyone should have it, not everyone wants it.”
