Flight Delays Hit East Coast Airports Amid Storms
On Monday evening, several major airports along the East Coast, including routes from New York to Washington, DC, faced significant flight delays due to storms in the area. As travelers gear up for the holiday weekend, this has led to quite a few frustrations.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported the first ground delay at JFK International Airport in New York City shortly after 4 PM, with an average departure delay of around 90 minutes.
Newark Airport Struggles with Delays
Newark Liberty Airport is experiencing major disruptions, primarily due to staffing shortages. It’s expected that flights will be affected until 2 AM, with delays stacking up to four hours as thunderstorms moved through the region.
Meanwhile, LaGuardia Airport is reporting delays of up to three hours, as the FAA implements a traffic management program for incoming flights.
Tips for Travelers Facing Confusion
As delays mount, confusion among travelers at Newark Airport has increased. Experts are suggesting ways to avoid being stranded. This situation underscores the real issues relating to weather setbacks, luggage problems, and ongoing staffing challenges.
As the storms progressed up the East Coast, other airports, including Philadelphia International and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, also began to see delays.
Statistics on Cancellations and Delays
Philadelphia Airport recorded an average delay of about two hours. Overall, five airports reported approximately 600 cancellations and around 1,900 delays, according to data from FlightAware. LaGuardia stood out with nearly 180 flights cancelled and 400 delays.
The FAA has not yet responded to inquiries regarding the situation. As travelers navigate this chaos, they’ll likely be hoping for smoother travels ahead.
