Bondi claims app notifying users of ICE sightings puts federal agents at risk

US Attorney General Critiques CNN on ICE Reporting

US Attorney General Pam Bondi expressed disapproval of a CNN report that spotlighted applications alerting users about nearby Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activities. She remarked that developers should “take care” regarding this issue.

The app in question, known as Iceblock, was created by Joshua Aaron, who stated his motivation was to combat the deportation efforts during the Trump administration, comparing such actions to those of Nazi Germany.

Aaron informed CNN that the app enables users to anonymously report the presence of ICE agents. Users can provide additional details, like the attire of agents and their vehicles.

Bondi highlighted a growing concern about the safety of federal agents. “Our ICE agents, along with other federal officers, are already facing dangers,” she stated during an interview. “This sends an alarming message to criminals. We cannot have that.” She further emphasized that this situation jeopardizes law enforcement officials across the nation.

The Iceblock app includes a disclaimer instructing users not to interfere with federal operations or promote violence. Despite this, the news surrounding the app ignited fierce criticism from the White House and other officials in the Trump administration. They argue that it endangers federal personnel by revealing their locations.

ICE Acting Director Todd Lyons reported an alarming 500% increase in assaults against agents amid heightened deportation efforts. Border Czar Tom Homan also criticized the app, claiming it increases the risks faced by law enforcement. “It’s a disturbing trend,” he said.

Bondi additionally faulted CNN for seemingly endorsing the app, reiterating her claim about its potential dangers for law enforcement officers. “It’s really embarrassing,” she conveyed during her comments.

A spokesperson for CNN defended the network’s coverage, stating that they reported on public applications gaining traction in the US and had reached out to ICE for feedback prior to publication. After the report, ICE’s responses were included in the story.
