Tragic Ambush Claims Lives of Firefighters in Idaho
In a shocking incident in northern Idaho, two firefighters lost their lives, and a third was seriously injured during an ambush while battling a brush fire. It all started with a small fire on Canfield Mountain, but things escalated quickly. When the firefighters arrived, they were met with gunfire from a sniper rifle. Reports indicate that, sadly, two firefighters have died, while a third is in surgery and reportedly “fighting for his life,” though he is stable at the moment.
“Two battalion chiefs down… multiple gunshot wounds. It’s evident that this was a trap set to lure us,” the firefighters communicated via radio during the incident.
Cootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris emphasized that the fire was deliberately set to ambush the firefighters. “We believe the suspect started the fire as a way to draw them in. This was a complete ambush. These firefighters had no chance,” he stated strongly.
“There was a large response from law enforcement, with about 300 officers present,” Sheriff Norris added.
After a tactical response team located the gunman using cell phone data, he was found dead in a nearby wooded area. However, authorities have not disclosed details about his identity, the type of firearm used, or the circumstances surrounding his death, including whether he took his own life.
“From what we know so far, I believe he was the only shooter,” Norris reported.
In a show of support for the fallen fire heroes, a crowd gathered at a local bridge, waving American flags in their honor. Pete Holly, assistant director of Cootenai Firefighters, expressed the gravity of the situation, saying, “This is not something we train for or expect. It’s unimaginable for firefighters to face such an attack.”
