Chip Roy Opposes Trump’s Legislation
Texas Representative Chip Roy stated on Tuesday that he couldn’t support President Donald Trump’s proposed “big and beautiful bill.”
During an appearance on “The Jesse Kelly Show,” Roy expressed concerns about the law’s current form. He pointed out that it continues to increase the deficit, allocates funds for illegal immigrant Medicare, supports taxpayer-funded sex change operations for minors, and restricts Planned Parenthood for a year. As a member of the House Rules Committee, he noted his willingness to vote against the bill in its present state, echoing sentiments shared by several other Republicans.
“The swamp is going to be a swamp, and if the administration really wants to end this madness, why would I support this bill? Sure, I’m looking for tax cuts and border security, but I can’t back all this spending,” Roy said. “That’s where I stand.”
The Senate narrowly passed the legislation with a 51-50 vote, with Vice President JD Vance casting the deciding vote. Roy remarked that the bill would likely struggle to pass in the House unless significant modifications are made.
“I think there are several House Republicans who feel the same way I do about this bill, and I’m one of them,” Roy mentioned. “I’m reviewing the details right now, trying to discern if there’s something I’m missing. But as I examine it, I can’t help but ask if this isn’t just going to deepen the deficit. Are we going to end up issuing more bonds and incurring more debt?”
Republican Senators Rand Paul of Kentucky and Susan Collins of Maine also voted against Trump’s proposal. Collins announced her retirement shortly after Trump threatened to support a potential challenge due to her opposition.
A White House spokesperson, Caroline Leavitt, indicated plans to challenge Kentucky Representative Warren Davidson after Trump’s earlier opposition to the bill’s initial June version.
