SBA leader criticizes Sen. Markey for labeling historic flag as 'White supremacist'

Flag Controversy Sparks Tension Between SBA and Massachusetts Senator

Small Business Administrator Kelly Loeffler recently responded strongly to accusations from Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey, who labeled the SBA’s flag display as reflecting “Christian nationalism” and “white supremacy.”

The SBA raised a large American flag alongside a smaller “Appeal to Heaven” flag at its Washington, DC headquarters in honor of Flag Day on June 11. This white flag, featuring green pine trees, dates back to the Revolutionary War and symbolizes the colonists’ hope for divine intervention against British rule.

Loeffler tweeted about the ceremony, stating that it was a “privilege” to represent 34 million small businesses under the stars and stripes.

However, some media outlets criticized the “Appeal to Heaven” flag as controversial, noting its presence among Capitol rioters on January 6 and its association with “Christian nationalists.” In the past, attempts were made to link the flag to Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito after it was spotted at his home.

Responding to this backlash, Markey publicly called the flag display “inappropriate” for a federal agency.

In an open letter dated June 25, Loeffler reiterated that federal agencies should rise above ideologies that could harm democracy. She defended the historical significance of the flag amid ongoing partisan tensions.

“I’m surprised by your fervor on this particular issue, considering it was merely a casual observance of Flag Day,” she wrote, emphasizing that the flag’s meaning can be subjective.

Loeffler pointed out that perceptions of certain flags as “racist” do vary, hinting at the complexities surrounding symbols in political contexts.

Her letter also highlighted a contrast between the criticism of the “Appeal to Heaven” flag and the acceptance of the “progressive pride” flag, which she labeled a symbol of discrimination toward selective groups.

She concluded her arguments by emphasizing the need to focus on pressing issues affecting small businesses, referencing tax cuts brought forth during the Trump administration.

Meanwhile, Markey, who faced accusations of disrespecting the American flag in a past incident, has yet to comment further on this ongoing disagreement.
