Kohberger’s plea agreement divides the families of the murdered University of Idaho victims.

Kohberger's plea agreement divides the families of the murdered University of Idaho victims.

Steve Goncalves, the father of Kaylee Goncalves, opted not to attend court on Wednesday after the individual charged with murdering her, Bryan Kohberger, entered a guilty plea. He stated, “I’m not going there,” as his family made their way into the courtroom.

Kaylee, along with her friends Xana Kernodle, Madison Mogen, and Ethan Chapin, shared a close bond as roommates. However, the plea deals for their accused murderer have created divisions among the families.

Kaylee’s family and the Kernodles have voiced their frustration, feeling that the justice system has failed them. They question whether the reasons behind Kohberger’s targeting of the four students will even be revealed.

In contrast, the Mogen and Chapin families expressed their approval of the plea deal.

Outside the courthouse, Goncalves took a stance amid the media, sharing his feelings of betrayal towards the prosecution. “You betrayed us,” he told Lata County Prosecutor Bill Thompson.

“This isn’t justice. Justice wasn’t the priority here, and the searchers didn’t consider the truth. Thompson took our day in court,” he added.

Goncalves’ feelings echo his concerns about the plea deal process just ahead of Kohberger’s admission of guilt in the brutal attacks on the four university students in 2022.

Kaylee’s family expressed their dissatisfaction with the prosecutors, stating they felt misled after nearly three years of anticipation for a trial. “I’m disappointed with the prosecutor’s decision,” one family member mentioned.

Kernodle’s aunt previously suggested that the prosecutors’ attempts to protect them might not be what they seem, indicating that the graphic nature of the evidence would still be presented during a trial.

Meanwhile, Mogen’s father shared his relief regarding the prosecutor’s decision to go ahead with a plea deal, stating the family was tired of the ongoing nightmare. He indicated that lengthy trials could prolong their suffering.

“We just want to move on and not have to face future court dates regarding this terrible situation,” he said.

Chapin’s mother noted that their family stood in support of the plea agreement, showcasing the split among the families regarding this decision.

On social media, the Goncalves family expressed their anger over the plea deal, denouncing it a betrayal to their loved one’s memory and vowing to pursue a complete account of what transpired that tragic night.

The backlash surrounding the plea agreement sparked online criticism, with some expressing their disapproval of the prosecutor’s office in reviews.

Kohberger, a 30-year-old former Ph.D. student, is accused of the murders that took place in November 2022 at the off-campus residence of the students. While the plea might conclude the current legal proceedings, many questions remain unanswered, particularly regarding his true motives.

Kohberger was a student at Washington State University, located just a short distance from where the victims were found.
