Ex-Obama Treasury secretary: Mamdani’s policies are not beneficial for New York

Former Obama Treasury secretary: Mamdani polices not 'good for New York'

Former Treasury Secretary Jack Lew has criticized New York City mayoral candidate Zoran Mamdani over his policy proposals linked to the Socialist Initiative.

Mamdani has pledged to implement free public transport, free childcare, and rent freezes if he secures the position.

“These policies aren’t beneficial for New York,” Lew expressed. He reflected on his deep ties to the city, stating, “I’ve spent most of my life here, and I’m concerned.”

He noted that there are parallels in some left and right policy approaches, emphasizing that appealing to populist sentiments doesn’t always translate to effective governance.

Republicans, including the President, have openly opposed Mamdani.

“As President, I won’t allow this communist extremist to harm New York,” President Trump remarked, alluding to Mamdani’s stance.

He added, “Trust me, I have all the power to ensure New York City remains vibrant and prosperous, just as it was when I was in office!”

Mamdani, a Muslim, has faced accusations of anti-Semitism and has advocated for U.S. recognition of Palestine as a sovereign nation.

Nevertheless, the core of the scrutiny remains his economic strategies.

On a recent show, Steven A. Smith asserted, “You can sprinkle democratic socialism everywhere, but that’s not what America represents. America stands for capitalism!” He urged fellow Democrats to steer clear of candidates like Mamdani.

In spite of the backlash, Mamdani has gained traction in the Democratic primary, outperforming former governor Andrew Cuomo and securing significant support from communities in Washington Heights, Flatbush, Williamsburg, Astoria, Park Slope, Bedford-Stuyvesant, and Crown Heights.

“I’ve had to adapt to the fact that the president comments on my appearance, my voice, my background, and who I am,” Mamdani said in response to Trump during an appearance on MSNBC’s “Meet the Press.”

“He’s trying to divert attention from my real mission. I’m advocating for the hardworking people he has disregarded from the start.”

The two have already publicly debated Mamdani’s commitment to maintaining New York City as a sanctuary city if elected.
