A woman in California has been arrested on multiple animal cruelty charges after authorities found her with over 100 cats in a moving van exposed to severe heat.
Deputies from the Merced County Sheriff’s Office discovered a total of 134 cats, of which 28 were already dead.
The initial responder noted at least 20 cats visible through the vehicle’s windows in distress.
Animal control was dispatched immediately, finding no food or water inside the van.
The cats ranged in age from just one week to eight years old.
All of the cats were taken to the Merced County Animal Shelter and later transferred to the Atwater Veterinary Center.
Once they receive medical clearance, they’ll be ready for adoption, according to the deputies.
When a cat is deemed healthy enough, it will be featured on the Merced County Animal Shelter’s website and social media platforms for potential adopters.
The owner, a 69-year-old woman from Long Beach, faces 93 charges of animal cruelty and has been booked into the Merced County Jail.
The Sheriff’s Office reminded the public that leaving animals in cars during hot weather is exceedingly hazardous. Even with windows open, temperatures can rise to dangerous levels very quickly.
This situation can result in heat stroke, dehydration, or even the death of animals left inside, authorities warned.
They urged pet owners to ensure their animals have a cool environment with ample shade, food, and water during travel.
