Mid-Flight Altercation Leads to Arrest
A New Jersey man found himself with black eyes and court dates after an unexpected mid-flight assault on a fellow passenger. Ishan Sharma, 21, from Newark, allegedly launched an unprovoked attack on Keanu Evans while traveling on a Frontier Airlines flight from Philadelphia to Miami-Dade International Airport.
During the flight, Evans reported that Sharma, seated one row ahead, grabbed him by the throat and made threatening remarks. “He was making these eerie laughs, saying things like, ‘If you challenge me, it’ll lead to your death,'” Evans recalled.
Things escalated when Evans pressed the help button to notify the flight attendants. Video footage that surfaced allegedly shows Sharma standing over Evans and choking him, which led to a swift retaliation from Evans.
“The guy was really pressing his luck,” an observer said, as they watched Evans defending himself by delivering a punch to the attacker.
The altercation drew the attention of nearby passengers, with one pleading, “Let him go! Stop, let him go!” as Evans acted in defense against Sharma.
Sharma’s mugshot later displayed significant injuries, including a swollen eye, while Evans, despite also having some facial injuries, expressed remorse over the incident. “I feel bad because I don’t want people to think negatively of me as a person,” he stated.
Authorities reported that Sharma was arrested and charged with battery. His defense attorney claimed that Sharma was merely “meditating,” suggesting this activity might have disturbed Evans, who sat behind him.
“My client comes from a religious background that includes meditation, and unfortunately, the passenger behind him wasn’t receptive to it,” stated defense attorney Renee Gordon.
As for Frontier Airlines, they have not responded to requests for comments regarding the incident.
