Heroic Rescue on Disney Cruise
A woman who garnered attention on social media for her compassion toward a 5-year-old girl who fell overboard from a Disney cruise has been recognized as the ship’s chief doctor, revealed by her proud sister.
Alyssa Charles, a South African pediatrician and emergency medical specialist, was seen embracing the little girl moments after she was safely rescued in a dramatic incident that was caught on camera last Sunday.
Her sister, Jasmine, shared her feelings of pride on social media and posted a clip of the rescue that has since gone viral.
“I can’t believe it! My sister is the Head Doctor on the boat! I was so emotional to see this,” Jasmine wrote.
Since starting her role with Disney Cruise Line last August, Charles has been dedicated to caring for passengers. She was on hand to offer comfort after the young girl accidentally slipped through a porthole and into the ocean.
The girl’s father, aged 37, jumped into the water immediately to save her. They were in the water together for roughly 20 minutes before help arrived.
Following their rescue, Jasmine was seen soothing the girl, providing reassurance after the terrifying experience.
Once back on board, both the father and daughter were assessed for any injuries and later taken to a local hospital.
Authorities had to dispel some online rumors about the situation, clarifying that the girl was not seen falling from the ship’s railing, as some had suggested.
The Broward County Sheriff’s Office commended the swift actions of the rescue team, acknowledging their preparedness and training that led to a successful outcome.
“It’s a relief to report good news for a change,” the statement remarked, considering how the situation could have ended differently.
