Zoran Mamdani Faces Criticism in New York Mayoral Race

Zoran Mamdani, a democratic socialist contender for the mayoralty of New York City, has come under fire from critics labeling him a “Communist.” Some believe these accusations might not hold much weight, as evidence suggests his campaign embraces certain revolutionary ideas.

In a video from 2021, Mamdani encouraged fellow socialists to stand firm on their aspirations, which included the phrase about “grabbing the means of production.” Another video released that same year by The Gravel Institute featured him promoting the idea of converting private homes to public assets, proposing to replace luxury condominiums with shared living arrangements, including communal laundry and food cooperatives.

Mamdani questions, “Why are so many people homeless?” He argues that the issue isn’t merely a lack of homes but rather the priorities of developers and landlords, whose main focus isn’t on people in need.

He expresses disappointment that homes are treated like consumer goods, much like clothes or cars. “There are plenty of houses for the wealthy, but the poor and working-class are left in the lurch,” he notes. This situation, he argues, is not only inefficient but also detrimental to society.

In his discussions, he cites postwar communist Vienna as a model worth considering, although he acknowledges the complexities involved. Mamdani imagines a future with more communal living setups, featuring shared amenities like kitchens and baths.

“To resolve the housing crisis, we need a significant shift away from how homes are currently accessed,” he asserts. His vision is one where quality housing is recognized as a fundamental human right for everyone.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump has also weighed in on the matter, labeling Mamdani as a “100% communist madman” and claiming he would intervene to “save New York City” should Mamdani get elected. Trump emphasized that he has the means to deny federal funding to the city if it ever aligns under Mamdani’s leadership.

Mamdani’s campaign has yet to publicly respond to these escalating critiques.
