ICE arrests July 4th offender who was let go due to sanctuary laws

Immigration Agents’ Actions Following Assault Case

Immigration officers apprehended illegal immigrants who had assaulted an American woman on Independence Day a few years back. Local police had released them, thanks to Oregon’s Sanctuary Act, according to reports.

In an incident on July 4, 2018, Kevin Contreras Mendoza, a 27-year-old undocumented immigrant from Mexico, chased a woman through the streets of Portland. He aggressively grabbed and groped her while she screamed for help.

DHS Deputy Chief Tricia McLaughlin remarked, “On this Independence Day, Americans are safer from the dangers on our streets.”

The woman’s cries attracted two bystanders, who chased Contreras Mendoza as he fled. He was eventually caught on September 13, 2018, and later convicted in 2019.

ICE had requested that local police hand over Contreras Mendoza, but these requests went unheeded, leading to his release back into the community, as noted by the Department of Homeland Security.

According to DHS, Contreras Mendoza entered the United States illegally from the Mexican border at an undisclosed time.

Oregon became the first state to adopt policies that protect illegal immigrants when it enacted Sanctuary laws in 1987.

McLaughlin criticized Oregon officials for failing to transfer Contreras Mendoza to ICE custody, stating that this allowed a known sex offender back onto the streets. She emphasized, in light of President Trump’s leadership, that ICE now has the authority to apprehend individuals posing risks to American safety.

In recent comments, Trump accused some Democrats of using illegal immigrants to expand their voter base, asserting that their policies undermine American citizens’ livelihoods.

As part of a new initiative, large-scale deportation efforts are expected to intensify, with funding to detain up to 100,000 illegal immigrants at one time, according to DHS.
