(News Nation) – As millions of Americans gear up for the July 4th holiday weekend, law enforcement agencies nationwide are alert to potential threats, particularly those arising from so-called “lone wolf” attackers.
The ongoing global conflicts and the fear of copycats have led federal authorities to issue warnings.
Jennifer Coffindaffer, a former FBI agent, noted that lone wolf incidents have become the predominant type of terrorist attack in the U.S.
“Over the past five years, about 93% of attacks in the West have been linked to lone wolves,” she mentioned.
Federal agencies are urging individuals to be more observant during the busy Fourth of July period, which could see increased threats given the holiday’s popularity. With its proximity to the weekend, many people might take extra days off, making it an opportune time for gatherings.
A bulletin from the FBI, alongside the Department of Homeland Security and other agencies, highlights the risk posed by individuals or small groups driven by political, racial, or personal motives, targeting large events like the Macy’s Fireworks Show in New York City and various festivities across the country.
There are also concerns about potential copycat incidents, drawing on past events like those in New Orleans.
Coffindaffer advised individuals not to become overly paranoid but encouraged them to remain aware of their surroundings. It’s essential to think about escape routes in case of emergencies and be mindful of social media threats that might arise.
She pointed out that global tensions, particularly with Iran and the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, contribute to the overall threat landscape.
The Department of Homeland Security has announced plans to enhance security measures in coordination with federal, state, and local partners to ensure safe celebrations.
These measures may include removing potential concealments for explosives, such as barricades and garbage cans, along with monitoring crowd behavior.
Authorities have stressed that, while no specific threats exist at this moment, they are urging the public to stay vigilant and report anything suspicious.
