Tragic Death of Diogo Jota
Gondomar, Portugal – On Friday, family and friends gathered at a church to mourn Diogo Jota, a Portuguese footballer who tragically lost his life in a car accident in Spain, along with his brother Andre. The wake and funeral proceedings took place after their bodies were returned home.
Supporters embraced and shed tears as they prepared for the brothers’ funeral, scheduled for Saturday. The two were found deceased near Zamora, Spain, after a crash occurred on a remote highway just after midnight on Thursday.
Authorities confirmed that their identities were established by family members before the repatriation to Portugal.
Jota had a home in Gondomar with his parents. This is where he started his football journey, growing up in the working-class neighborhood near Porto, his birthplace.
The devastating news of Jota’s passing surfaced just weeks after he married his long-time partner, Rute Cardoso, in celebration of Liverpool’s recent Premier League title victory. The couple had three young children together. It’s a confusing and painful time for many.
Spanish law enforcement is currently looking into the incident, which reportedly did not involve any other vehicles.
Jota’s brother, Andre Silva, played for Penafiel in Portugal’s lower divisions.
The news has deeply affected the football community and officials across Portugal. Liverpool fans honored him with floral tributes and team scarves outside Anfield Stadium. Additionally, a moment of silence was observed before Portugal’s match against Spain in the Women’s European Championships held in Switzerland.
In his hometown, the loss is profoundly felt, particularly at the football club where he began his career at age nine. One local shared how Jota always remained close to his roots, maintaining friendships with those who trained alongside him in Gondomar, even inviting them to watch Liverpool matches from England.
