Texas Flood Rescues and Casualty Reports
A video shared by Gov. Greg Abbott showcases a rescue operation conducted by the Texas Public Safety Helicopter Aviation Agency. This mission involved saving a woman who was clinging to a tree as devastating floods surged through the Guadalupe River below. Overnight, these flash floods have tragically resulted in numerous fatalities, including at least 23 children reported missing from a private Christian girl camp near Kerrville, Texas.
“Air rescue missions like this are carried out around the clock,” Abbott noted. He reassured the public, stating that efforts will continue until everyone is accounted for.
The footage depicts a tense scene— a woman desperately holding onto a tree while a helicopter hovers above, battling the fierce river currents below. Rescue teams maneuvered carefully to retrieve her safely.
During a press briefing, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick (filling in for Abbott, who is currently out of state) revealed that the Guadalupe River rose an astonishing 26 feet within just 45 minutes. This sudden rise was due to intense rainfall that hit the Kerr County area on Thursday night. Reports indicate that around 20 children from Camp Mystic, a private Christian camp situated along the river in Hunt, Texas, are missing. The camp, which serves about 750 attendees, has communicated with the parents of the missing girls.
Officials have also sounded the alarm regarding additional flooding near the Lano River, close to Mason, Texas. Reports detail that the water levels have surpassed major flood thresholds.
As of now, at least 13 fatalities have been confirmed in the Kerr County area due to the floods. There’s also been a report of a dramatic rescue involving a young man who was trapped in debris after being displaced from an RV park. Rescue workers found him wired and further injured with a broken leg.
Patrick stated he is collaborating with the state emergency response team concerning the severe flooding affecting the Hill Country and Concho Valley regions. He emphasized the serious nature of the situation, as the Kerr County Sheriff’s Office has reported catastrophic conditions.
Additionally, Matt Stringer, a Texas journalist, characterized the flood incident as a “large casualty scene.” In anticipation of the potential flooding, Gov. Abbott mobilized the Texas National Guard even before the storm hit.
As the situation evolves, more updates will become available.
