Musk reaffirms concerns about third-party risks with Independence Day survey

On Friday, Elon Musk, the tech billionaire, turned to external proposals as his tensions with President Trump over hefty spending and tax measures intensified during an Independence Day online poll.

Just hours before Trump enacted a substantial settlement package, Musk posed a question to his followers on the platform X about whether establishing an “American Party” was a good idea. He initially suggested this concept after his recent public engagement with the president.

“Independence Day seems like the perfect occasion to ask if you want to break free from the two-party system (often referred to as the Uniparty)!” he remarked. “Should we create an American party?”

The CEO of Tesla, who owns X, has rehashed this investigation multiple times, revealing some glimpses into his possible strategic approach throughout the day.

“One approach could be to target just two or three Senate seats and around 8-10 congressional districts,” he shared. “Given the razor-thin legislative margins, it could be enough to decisively vote against contentious laws, ensuring they truly reflect the people’s will.”

This latest move, similar to his previous attempts to rattle Trump and GOP legislators, follows his ongoing criticism of the legislation that reached Trump’s desk.

The House approved the final bill on Thursday after a series of tense negotiations with Republican holdouts.

Earlier this week, the Senate attempted to pass its version of the settlement package, but Musk issued a threat to back significant challengers to those supporting the bill. The president responded by indicating that Musk could risk losing government contracts for several of his businesses, hinting at potential repercussions for South African CEOs.

Musk had stepped down from his advisory role in the Trump administration in late May after his special government employee status lapsed. He was initially selected to oversee efforts aimed at enhancing government efficiency, a committee designed to tackle waste and fraud within the federal system.

There has been speculation about the longevity of Trump’s relationship with Musk, especially after the billionaire condemned the settlement package as “a nasty abuse” and warned it could lead to “political suicide” for Republicans.

The president expressed disappointment at Musk’s critique and showed signs of apprehension during and after their escalating exchanges online. Meanwhile, Tesla’s sales have suffered a downturn since this back-and-forth.

Musk acknowledged that his remarks may have gone too far at one point, suggesting some thawing of relations. However, he also recognized earlier this week that the bill was set to extend Trump’s 2017 tax credits and implement cuts to Medicaid and energy tax incentives.

“We made a promise,” Trump stated during the signing ceremony at the White House on Friday.

“This is a democratic victory on the birthday of a democracy,” he added. “And I have to say, people are happy.”
