Tragic Flash Floods in New Mexico
Flash floods in New Mexico have claimed the lives of three individuals, including two young children, following severe weather that previously affected the Texas Hill Country, leading to over 100 fatalities earlier. The village of Ruidoso reported that a four-year-old girl and a seven-year-old boy were swept away during the deluge, with their home being carried downstream.
Mayor Lynn Crawford expressed the community’s deep sorrow in a statement, saying, “Our hearts are broken for the family who lost their loved ones in this terrible tragedy.” He added that the village is united in grief and committed to supporting the affected families during this unimaginably difficult time.
In another troubling detail, the Rio Ruidoso reached a record height of 20 feet—five feet higher than previous measurements. The floods were exacerbated by heavy rainfall in areas previously affected by wildfires last year.
The emergency response teams acted quickly, reportedly rescuing 50 to 60 individuals during the chaos. By the evening, the waters had receded, allowing search efforts to focus on locating the missing while public works crews began clearing debris from the roads. Unfortunately, some vehicles remained stuck in the mud.
New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham announced that she had acquired a federal response team and signed a request for an emergency declaration to expedite resources. “New Mexico is mobilizing all the resources we have,” she noted, emphasizing the need for federal support to help Ruidoso recover from this disaster.
