Study Reveals Limited Church Discipline Practices Among Protestants
A recent study by Lifeway Research indicates that formal church discipline is infrequently practiced in many Protestant congregations. According to the findings, only one in six pastors reported that their church had engaged in discipling members over the past year.
One expert noted, “The lack of church discipline isn’t necessarily due to the absence of sin among members. It typically occurs when individuals either don’t repent or no longer meet the qualifications for their church roles because of their actions.”
Interestingly, more than half (54%) of pastors admitted that their congregations had never formally addressed any member’s actions while they were in office. Some pastors seemed unaware of any past instances of discipline.
The data also revealed that about 22% of respondents noted disciplinary actions had taken place more than three years ago, while only 6% reported such actions within the last year or so. This aligns with prior surveys from Lifeway conducted in 2017.
Church discipline appears to be particularly rare among mainline denominations. For instance, 47% of evangelical pastors and 70% of mainline pastors stated that their congregations generally lack awareness of any disciplinary actions. Notably, 82% of Methodist pastors indicated that discipline had never been enacted at their churches.
McConnell, a researcher, explained, “The larger the congregation, the more likely certain behaviors will trigger disciplinary measures. Additionally, teaching and traditions play a significant role in a church’s readiness to impose discipline.”
While around 80% of churches have established procedures for discipline, these policies are seldom enforced. Only 14% of pastors reported having no official policy in place. Interestingly, opinions varied on who should oversee discipline: 14% believed it should fall solely to the elders, 11% to the pastor, and 10% thought the entire congregation should be involved. A notable 35% felt that a majority agreement was needed. The likelihood of lacking a disciplinary policy was significantly higher among mainstream pastors (21%) compared to evangelical pastors (12%), with Methodists showing a 36% rate.
The Lifeway study was conducted with a nationally representative sample of over 1,000 Protestant pastors between August and September 2024.
