In a significant development, a suspect has been indicted related to an attack on the Prairiland detention facility in Alvarado, Texas. This individual, Daniel Rolando Sanchez Estrada, 38, received a green card during the Biden administration and had previously been granted DACA status, which allows certain undocumented immigrants to stay temporarily in the U.S.
Sanchez Estrada is mentioned in connection with criminal charges against ten individuals allegedly involved in the weekend assault on the detention center. Notably, during this attack, an officer was shot in the head, although reports indicate he is expected to recover.
The ten suspects are facing several federal charges, including attempted murder of federal officers and discharging firearms in connection with a violent crime.
Sanchez Estrada was also arrested by the FBI on charges of conspiracy to tamper with federal evidence. According to the complaints, he was seen transferring several packages containing what was described as anti-government material to his vehicle.
It’s interesting to note that the so-called “riot disorder” is identified as a form of commitment to violence and rebellion, part of what some categorize as a broader terrorism threat.
He has a background that traces back to 1986 when he entered the U.S. as a teenager. Recognized for DACA in 2013, he had renewed his status multiple times in subsequent years. There’s also a record of a previous arrest for drug possession in 2020, though those charges were eventually dismissed. He applied for and received his green card in 2024.
On a related note, a recent ambush on Border Patrol agents saw another group attacking in a similar manner. Just days ago, a heavily armed crew initiated an assault on the Prairiland center, marking an increase in aggression towards ICE and border patrol personnel, amidst ongoing debates about immigration policy.
During the attack, a barrage of fireworks was aimed at officials, while personal vehicles were vandalized with graffiti. Witnesses reported that agents were lured into the open, resulting in an exchange of gunfire. A criminal complaint indicates that the attackers had discharged a considerable number of rounds from an AR-15-style weapon.
One suspect, Bradford Morris, attempted to flee the scene in a vehicle filled with firearms and tactical gear. He informed authorities that he had been part of an online group potentially planning these violent acts, saying he had brought associates from Dallas to the area.
Police reports indicate that seven additional suspects dressed in military-style attire were found nearby, suggesting a coordinated effort. This incident occurs amid rising tensions and criticism aimed at law enforcement regarding immigration enforcement policies. Recent violence against officers, including another attack in McAllen, has triggered heightened concern among officials.
The Department of Homeland Security has emphasized that any threats against law enforcement will be taken seriously, vowing to pursue and prosecute those responsible fully.
