Ukrainian Spy Shot in Kiev

A senior Ukrainian intelligence officer was shot in Kiev on Thursday, with Russia being blamed for the attack. The incident involved an unknown assailant who approached Colonel Ivan Volonich of the Ukrainian Security Service around 9 a.m. local time, shooting him five times before fleeing the scene. Surveillance footage reportedly captures the moment of the ambush as Volonich was heading to his car outside his apartment.

“A criminal investigation has been launched into the murder of an SSU employee in the Holosiivskyi district of Kyiv,” stated a spokesperson for the Ukrainian agency. “The Security Services, along with the National Police, are implementing extensive measures to determine the circumstances surrounding the crime and to capture the individual responsible.”

According to reports, Volonich was pronounced dead on the scene due to multiple gunshot wounds. He had led a division within the Ukrainian Security Services that specialized in high-value operations and counter-terrorism efforts.

Adding to the gravity of the situation, former Ukrainian intelligence officer Roman Cherbinsky recounted, “I left the apartment today with five shots at close range…the enemy killer did his dirty work.” This incident raises alarming concerns about Russia’s involvement, as former Ukrainian Parliament member Ihar Mosiychuk has also claimed that Russian special services may be orchestrating targeted assassinations.

Kiev police confirmed they are working to clarify the details surrounding the shooting. They found Volonich’s body upon their arrival after receiving a call about the incident.

The police also mentioned that they have identified a suspect in connection with the crime and are taking steps to detain him.
