Amanda Anisimova Shocks Alina Sabalenka to Reach Wimbledon Final
American tennis player Amanda Anisimova pulled off a significant upset against world number one Alina Sabalenka, winning in a tightly contested three-set match at the All England Club on Thursday. The final scores were 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. This victory marks Anisimova’s first time reaching the final of a Grand Slam tournament.
At just 23 years old, Anisimova demonstrated remarkable resilience. After losing the second set, she broke Sabalenka’s serve to kick off the third. Still, Sabalenka quickly won three consecutive games, putting pressure on Anisimova as she led 3-1. Although Sabalenka found herself trailing 5-2, she managed to claw back to 5-4. However, Anisimova held her composure and secured the win.
Interestingly, the last time Anisimova had reached a Grand Slam semifinal was back in 2019 during the French Open, where she lost at just 17 years old. This victory was bittersweet for Sabalenka, who has faced defeat in the Wimbledon semifinals for the third time, with previous losses in 2021 and 2023.
Sabalenka had a strong record heading into this match—she was 11-2 in major tournaments when dropping the first set. Prior to facing Anisimova, she had surrendered just one set in the entire tournament.
Anisimova now has an impressive 6-3 career record against Sabalenka and will face the winner of the upcoming match between Belinda Bencic and Iga Swiatek in the final.
