State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce indicated that the agency is ready to act “quickly” following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn a lower court ruling that had blocked significant federal cuts by the Trump administration. “I think it’s fair to say that, with everything that happens, we move quickly,” Bruce remarked in response to a query about the timing for notifying department employees. She emphasized that the agency’s actions aren’t about waiting for a response from the public or international observers.
Bruce pointed out that the only impediment to the State Department’s troop reductions had been legal challenges from the courts. “The delays were due to the court, not from our side,” she elaborated. “It would have been a challenge to know that something beneficial for everyone needed to be done.” She affirmed that the agency would indeed proceed swiftly, although she refrained from committing to a specific timeline.
In addition, Bruce was cautious about elaborating on whether the recent court order requires the administration to disclose the reasons behind its restructuring efforts. While the Supreme Court’s ruling allows for significant job cuts, questions linger regarding the necessity of public transparency in the process.
The court order, issued by U.S. District Judge Susan Ilston, concerns the level of detail the Trump administration must provide regarding its planned reductions and reforms. This order came after Ilston’s earlier ruling in May, which had temporarily halted the administration’s initiatives. It’s worth noting that the legal dispute arose from a lawsuit filed by unions and advocacy groups, who contend that the president’s measures overstepped authority and jeopardized the rights of certain civil servants.
