DHS Secretary Noem criticizes CNN's coverage of Texas flood response as 'garbage'

FEMA Response Controversy During Texas Floods

U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem has pushed back against a CNN report claiming that FEMA’s response to the recent devastating floods in Texas was delayed due to bureaucratic issues. This report surfaced after over 100 people lost their lives in flash floods that struck central Texas during the weekend of July 4th.

In a segment on “Fox & Friends,” Noem addressed the CNN article, which suggested that FEMA, under the DHS umbrella, faced obstacles that hindered its ability to provide crucial assistance to flood victims. She labeled the report as “fake news,” expressing her frustration with CNN’s portrayal of the situation.

According to the CNN article, Noem’s directive requiring her personal approval for contracts exceeding $100,000 may have stalled FEMA’s access to necessary disaster relief funds and resources. The piece highlighted how this order could have stripped some agencies of their needed autonomy at a critical moment.

There was chaos as first responders searched the banks of the Guadalupe River for those swept away by the floods. Many felt the urgency of the situation, with time of the essence for those affected.

Longtime FEMA officials, speaking to CNN, indicated their concern over the lack of clarity in operations and whether the agency was effectively prepared to respond. They noted that FEMA typically mobilizes faster, positioning specialized teams close to disaster zones in anticipation of immediate needs—something that didn’t seem to happen this time.

Noem, however, contested claims of any delay in the response on “Fox & Friends.” She asserted that her teams—like the Coast Guard and Border Patrol tactical units—were deployed promptly to assist. Despite this, she acknowledged ongoing efforts in New Mexico and North Carolina, indicating the challenges in coordinating resources across multiple states.

In her critique of CNN, Noem reiterated her belief that the network peddles misinformation, which she argued could be damaging to the nation. Meanwhile, CNN stands firm on its reporting, suggesting that the situation remains complex and still under scrutiny.
