South Carolina Democrat Questions Newsom’s Presidential Aspirations

A leading Democrat from South Carolina expressed that Governor Gavin Newsom needs to address the “many mistakes in California” before pursuing a presidential run. This statement was made on Thursday.

Richard Harpootlian, a former state senator and Democratic Party chairman, noted that Newsom might face challenges finding support in various regions of South Carolina. He mentioned that it’s hard to spot newspapers that appeal to blue-collar workers.

“He’s a very, very attractive guy,” Harpootlian said, but added that the party is looking for someone who can truly resonate with the hopes and aspirations of blue-collar workers. “I’m not entirely sure he’s that person.”

These comments followed Newsom’s recent visit to South Carolina where he participated in events aimed at engaging local voters.

During his two-day trip, Newsom reportedly stopped by churches, cafes, and community centers to connect with voters, as well as party members and local leaders, all in preparation for the upcoming midterm elections in 2026. Observers are speculating that Newsom’s travels in key primary states suggest he might be eyeing a presidential nomination for 2028.

According to Harpootlian, Newsom is perceived as “just another wealthy individual,” reflecting on the notion that his wealth stems from ties to the heirs of the Getty Oil Fortune. He expressed doubt that Newsom is effectively appealing to blue-collar voters.

“If he can show a history of tackling significant issues like homelessness and social safety nets, he’d likely be seen as a more favorable candidate,” Harpootlian explained. “I think he’s struggling to clarify the many issues happening in California.”

In the wake of President Donald Trump’s recent electoral victory, Democrats and media commentators have been analyzing the 2024 election results. Some party members seemed to have neglected crucial economic topics while focusing their attacks on Trump, which may have alienated working-class voters.

South Carolina Democrats announced Newsom’s visit last week, emphasizing a desire to engage national Democrats with communities in the Palmetto State that they feel have been neglected by Republican leadership.

Newsom’s office has not yet provided a comment regarding these comments or his future plans.
