Stroman Delivers Gritty Performance in Yankees’ Victory
Are the Yankees making a heroic comeback? Absolutely. But let’s talk about Marcus Stroman’s “gritty” five-inning start.
Since he came back from the injured list at the end of June, the 34-year-old right-hander has been quite reliable. He recently contributed to a 6-5 comeback win over the Mariners, pitching five innings, allowing six hits, and two walks.
“Another gritty performance,” remarked manager Aaron Boone after the game. “He went five innings again, and I thought he did really well.”
Boone added, “I think we could always count on him. Whether he was using his sinker, changeup, or cutter, he mixed speeds effectively with different breaking balls. He kept the batters guessing and kept us in the game.”
Stroman’s outing wasn’t spectacular, but it was dependable.
If we look back, he opened his 11th season in March but struggled initially, not making it past five innings in three starts. In those first two outings, he conceded seven runs over 8²/₃ innings and faced challenges that led to a stint on the injured list due to knee inflammation. Yikes.
In those three initial outings, his ERA ballooned to 11.57. However, after returning, Stroman has managed a more respectable 3.60 ERA over 15 innings across his three starts.
While these numbers aren’t jaw-dropping, they’re getting closer to his career average of 3.77.
This newfound stability is rather timely, considering the Yankees’ rotation is facing challenges as the July 31 trade deadline approaches. With Clark Schmidt likely sidelined for the rest of the season due to Tommy John surgery and both Luis Gil and Ryan Yabreu expected to miss until August, Stroman’s effectiveness is increasingly critical.
It’s clear he’s starting to fulfill the expectations that came with his two-year, $37 million contract signed before last season.
“I’m just really confident,” Stroman said. “I allow myself to be who I am. I’m not trying to change as a pitcher.”
