Knicks stumble in initial attempt to adopt Mike Brown's plan

Mike Brown’s Vision for the Knicks

LAS VEGAS — At his introductory press conference, Mike Brown was somewhat reserved in what he shared, yet he did emphasize his eagerness for swift offensive play.

He communicated this desire to the coaching staff as well.

“We laid out the fundamentals we want to implement on both ends of the court. Most of that was discussed during the presser, and it’s about playing fast,” remarked Jordan Brink, the Knicks’ Summer League coach.

The 104-86 defeat to the Pistons on Friday night didn’t exactly showcase Brown’s vision. They got off to a rocky start, struggling with ball control, and couldn’t recover from there.

With Brown and the front office observing from courtside, second-year point guard Tyler Kolek had a tough night, finishing with 10 points but also racking up five turnovers. The erratic performances typical of the New York roster seemed to mark this as nothing more than a frustrated beginning.

However, it wasn’t pretty by any means.

“I felt it took me some time to find my rhythm in the game,” said Brink, who was an assistant to Tom Thibodeau last season. “We had been playing at a good pace all week, but in those first five minutes, we didn’t carry that over. That was the biggest takeaway for our offensive strategy.”

Winning in the Summer League isn’t crucial, especially given that none of these players are major contributors to the Knicks roster. Still, at least three players—Kolek, Ariel Hukporti, and Pacome Dadiet—are assured spots.

They also have a chance to secure different roster spots and three two-way contracts.

Unfortunately, they all faced difficulties on Friday, shooting just 40% from the field and an alarming 22% from three-point range.

It’s quite challenging to play at a fast pace when you’re committing 16 turnovers in just 40 minutes.

“(Playing fast) isn’t solely about the tempo of getting up and down the court. It’s about how quickly we execute everything,” Brink explained. “We need to be swift in getting the ball up the floor. If the initial play isn’t there, we have to move to the next action immediately.”

The silver lining is that there are four more games in Vegas, presenting more chances to mold Brown’s ideal approach.

Kolek is eager for another opportunity to embody Brown’s philosophy. “He’s not speaking to the entire team yet. He came in last week, but based on what the coaches emphasize during summer league, I’m sure he’s communicating the importance of playing fast, pushing the ball, and quick ball movement.”
