Changes to how you get your Social Security and VA benefits this fall: Important information to understand

Changes have already been made to government benefits payments this year, including increases in some checks and adjustments for overpayments. Another significant change is on the horizon, set to impact how beneficiaries receive their payments in about two months.

In March, President Trump signed a Presidential Order aimed at modernizing “payments to American bank accounts.” The order emphasized that paper checks and mailed orders from the national general fund are “16 times more likely to be reported as lost or stolen, returned or changed” compared to electronic payments.

To address these issues and enhance “operational efficiency,” the order mandates that federal government funds be disbursed electronically, with a few exceptions.

This directive affects “all federal spending, including in-government payments, benefits, vendor payments, and tax refunds,” which covers benefits from both the Social Security Administration and the Veterans Affairs Department.

Acceptable digital payment methods under this order include direct deposits, prepaid cards, digital wallets, real-time payment systems, and other modern electronic options.

Paper payments are expected to be phased out by September 30th, though some exceptions apply.

Non-electronic payments may still be available for individuals with no access to banking services or electronic systems. Additional exceptions include situations where electronic payments pose excessive difficulties, as well as cases deemed necessary by the Treasury Secretary.

The Social Security Administration and the Veterans Affairs Bureau did not provide immediate responses to inquiries for further details. Data shows that over 99% of beneficiaries already receive payments via direct deposit.

If you haven’t switched to electronic benefits, you’ll need to log into your account and update your settings. You can also reach out to your representative or bank for assistance with direct deposit information. Moreover, you can update your VA benefits payment details online or by phone.

It’s also important to note that the order requires “federal receipt payments” to be made electronically. This means that if you owe federal taxes, sending a check or cash in an envelope may no longer be an option, and the same goes for federal student loan payments.
