EU Delays Retaliatory Tariffs in Pursuit of Agreement with Trump

EU Suspends Tariffs on US Goods in Hopes of Trade Deal

BRUSSELS — The European Union is putting a pause on retaliatory tariffs aimed at US goods, effective Monday, as it seeks to negotiate a trade agreement with the Trump administration by the end of this month.

“This is a time for negotiations,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated on Sunday in Brussels, following a letter sent by President Donald Trump from Mexico on August 1, which indicated new tariffs of 30%.

The EU, being the largest trading partner to the US and the world’s biggest trading bloc, had plans to implement these tariffs at midnight Brussels time (6 PM EDT). The EU is handling trade negotiations for its 27 member states.

Von der Leyen explained that these new measures were postponed until August 1, reflecting Trump’s letters that suggest negotiations should continue “until August 1.” European leaders have asked both Trump and von der Leyen for additional time to work things out.

“We’ve consistently communicated our preference for negotiated solutions,” she added. But, she also indicated that if no agreement is reached, preparations for other measures would continue.

Alongside Indonesia’s President Prabowo Suboant, von der Leyen emphasized that the trade tensions with the US highlight the need for “diversifying our trade ties.”

Trump, for his part, has insisted that his global tariffs are crucial for revitalizing the US economy, which he claims has been undermined by other nations for many years. In his letter to the EU, Trump asserted that the US trade deficit poses a national security threat.

US trading partners face ongoing uncertainty with the constant threats from Trump regarding tariffs, which can lead to shifting deadlines. The implications of such tariffs are far-reaching, impacting nearly every corner of the global economy.

As per Eurostat, trade between the EU and the US in goods and services reached 1.7 trillion euros (about $2 trillion) in 2024, averaging around 4.6 billion euros daily. The major exports from Europe to the US include pharmaceuticals, vehicles, aircraft, chemicals, medical devices, wine, and spirits.

On Monday, trade ministers from EU member countries will convene to discuss trade relations, particularly focusing on the dynamics with both the US and China.
