Lightning Strikes Injure Three at Florida Beach

On Saturday night, three individuals were injured after being struck by lightning in St. Augustine, a popular summer beach destination in Florida.

Among the victims, two were taken to the hospital—one in serious condition while the other had minor injuries. The third individual opted not to go to the hospital.

The pier was closed following the incident as firefighters responded to treat the injured and assess any damage. It is expected to reopen on Monday.

St. John’s County Firefighter cautioned the public via a Facebook post, reminding everyone to stay indoors during thunderstorms. “Don’t take to the jetty while emergency work is ongoing, and remember to seek shelter when you hear thunder,” they advised.

St. Augustine Beach Mayor Dylan Lumrell echoed these warnings, urging residents to find cover if they hear thunder. “There’s a big storm, and lightning can strike at any moment,” he stated.

The lightning strike caused panic among beachgoers, with many fleeing the water immediately. A witness described the scene: “I was scared, everyone was scared.”

According to the National Weather Service, six lightning-related fatalities were recorded in the United States in 2025, occurring across several states including North Carolina, Texas, Mississippi, Florida, and Oklahoma.

The average annual death toll from lightning strikes is about 20 cases per year over the last decade. To minimize the risk of being struck, the National Weather Service advises people to vacate elevated areas like hills, mountain ridges, or peaks, and to avoid lying down, hiding under isolated trees, or using rocks for shelter during a storm.
