Yankees head into the All-Star break after another defeat to the Cubs

The Yankees stumbled through the All-Star break, facing off against the Cubs and losing 4-1 in the Bronx on Sunday. This marked their second consecutive loss, following a tough game against Chicago’s Matthew Boyd. The defeat highlighted a concerning trend, with the Yankees managing to win only one of their last four series.

In a sense, this loss wraps up the first half of their season. Aaron Boone shared his thoughts before the game, describing the team’s performance as “imperfect.” They currently sit at 18-23 since May 28th, a tough stretch indeed.

On Sunday, rookie right-hander Will Warren gave a decent performance, though it wasn’t without its challenges. Unfortunately, Yankees reliever Ian Hamilton struggled, allowing a decisive two-run homer to Danceby Swanson soon after entering the game in the sixth inning. The only bright spot for the Yankees came from Giancarlo Stanton, who hit a leadoff home run in the bottom of the second inning, but that was about all they could muster.

Warren had a bumpy start, initially giving up a homer to Michael Bush, but managed to settle in somewhat. He did face a jam after the Yankees failed to convert a double play from Nico Horner’s hard-hit ground ball, resulting in additional pressure. Stanton’s home run temporarily brought hope, tying the game early on, but Swanson’s hit was a real blow.

Warren managed to finish strong, leaving the game with only a run allowed, but Hamilton’s two-run homer against Swanson was a critical misstep. The Yankees’ defense also faltered, leading to more trouble in the seventh inning. Tim Hill put in a shaky performance, hitting the first two batters he faced. A double from Suzuki and a grounder from Crow Armstrong added to the chaos, allowing the Cubs to pull ahead 4-1.

It seems like this defense is still figuring things out, especially when it comes to handling quick plays. Overall, the Yankees find themselves at a crossroads, needing to regroup as they move forward in the season.
