Joe Biden recently discussed the criticism directed at his use of autopens.

He asserted that all decisions regarding pardons and commutations made during his last few months in office were his own.

According to a report from the New York Times:

Former President Biden stated that he permitted his staff to utilize autopens because he “offers many people generosity.”

This was brought up in a New York Times interview where Biden also mentioned an investigation into claims that a House Republican and the Trump administration used autopens for various official documents during their tenure. He maintained that he personally approved every pardon and commutation before leaving office but indicated that he had directed his staff to use autopens for several warrants, as there were many individuals involved.

“I made every decision,” Biden told the Times, referring to the use of autopens for pardons and commutations between December 2024 and January 2025.

He also talked about pardons for family and prominent individuals, like General Mark A. Milley and Dr. Anthony Fauci. The only pardon he signed with his own hand during this period was for his son, Hunter Biden. He highlighted his direct involvement in “highly notable pardons.”

“Everyone was aware of how vindictive they could be, so they understood the need to protect their families from enormous legal fees,” Biden said.

While he doesn’t individually approve every name on the pardon list, he does have established criteria for who qualifies.

Another report from the Daily Mail mentioned:

Biden claimed he made “all decisions,” but clarified that he didn’t personally approve every individual case in his final weeks at the White House.

Instead, he set criteria to help determine which offenders should receive pardons, categorizing them in various ways, some resulting in a reduced sentence.

This discussion comes as Republicans have scrutinized the use of autopens, questioning Biden’s awareness of the decisions being made.

Currently, Republicans are looking into the matter.
