Trump Hopes for Gaza Ceasefire

President Donald Trump, speaking to reporters at Andrews Air Force Base after returning from the FIFA Club World Cup finals, expressed his hope to initiate a ceasefire in Gaza within a week. “Gaza, we’re talking, so we hope we’re trying to straighten it next week. Let’s see what happens,” he said.

A senior Israeli official mentioned last week that a 60-day ceasefire in Gaza seemed to be nearing fruition, potentially including the release of 10 of the 20 Israeli hostages still alive. The Israeli government, however, continues to prioritize its objective of freeing the remaining hostages while also aiming to dismantle Hamas’s leadership in Gaza.

There seems to be increasing optimism among Israeli officials about a prospective agreement. Over the past few days, negotiations have hit a snag. A source involved in the mediation with Arab diplomats indicated that discussions related to Israel’s military retreat from Gaza have also stalled.

Netanyahu met with Trump and his team at the White House last week and reiterated that the conflict won’t cease until Hamas is stripped of all military and civilian control. He remains committed to the goal of recovering all 50 hostages, of which 20 are believed to be alive and held in Gaza.

On Wednesday, Israel proposed a limited withdrawal, but Hamas rejected it outright. The offer reportedly aimed at launching what Netanyahu calls a “humanitarian city” in southern Gaza. Israeli Defense Minister Katz mentioned that he envisions all of Gaza’s inhabitants being funneled through entry points for inspections, with plans to prevent them from leaving. This idea has met with considerable resistance both in Israel and internationally.

Hamas has dismissed several ceasefire overtures, warning that if it refuses a deal, it may enter into Gaza City, where many terrorist functions are concentrated, especially if remaining Israeli hostages are endangered.

The situation is complex, and Hamas faces a tough decision amidst the heightened risks of a conflict that prioritizes the safety of hostages, which remains top of mind for many in Israel.
