Tragic Shooting in Lexington, Kentucky
In Lexington, Kentucky, a violent incident on Sunday resulted in the deaths of two individuals, including a Kentucky State Police officer, while three others sustained injuries. This occurred during what authorities described as a “squared incident” involving a single suspect, whose actions peaked at the Baptist Church.
Authorities reported that troopers initially encountered the suspect near Bluegrass Airport around 11:30 AM after a license plate reader alert was triggered. During a traffic stop, the suspect shot and killed a state trooper and subsequently fled.
Lexington Police clarified that the situation was unrelated to the airport itself. After abandoning the initial vehicle, the suspect is believed to have carjacked another vehicle and proceeded to the Richmond Road Baptist Church, located approximately 16 miles away.
Although the suspect’s identity hasn’t been disclosed, he reportedly had connections to the small congregation at the Baptist Church. Four individuals, two women and two men, were shot on the church property.
Tragically, police confirmed that a 72-year-old woman and a 32-year-old woman died from their injuries. The two unidentified men were taken to a local hospital, one in serious condition while the other was reported stable.
Local police, along with state troopers, worked together to secure the scene at the church. Police Chief Lawrence Weathers indicated that three officers from the Lexington Police Department discharged their weapons during the incident, resulting in the suspect being shot and declared dead at the scene.
Authorities stated that the injured troopers were in stable condition and receiving treatment. Witnesses who came forward to assist the trooper have been acknowledged, although their identities remain unknown.
Details regarding the suspect’s motivation for the shooting have not been disclosed. “Sometimes things happen, but we have no reason,” Chief Weathers remarked during the press conference.
In response to the violence, areas surrounding the Baptist Church were cordoned off, and police urged residents to adhere to instructions from officers while using alternate routes.
As for the Bluegrass Airport, law enforcement activity led to road closures nearby around 1 PM, although operations at the airport were reported to be continuing normally.
Governor Andy Beshear expressed his condolences, stating, “Pray for everyone affected by these meaningless acts of violence,” while also commending the quick response of local law enforcement. He noted the unusual string of incidents in Lexington, highlighting the alarming situation involving the suspect that culminated in the church shootings.
