Gardenia Blue Color Gets FDA Approval in Victory for MAHA

FDA Approves New Natural Food Color

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced on Monday that it has approved a new natural food color, making it the fourth such addition under the Trump administration’s American Health (MAHA) initiative to phase out artificial food dyes in the U.S.

The newly approved color, Gardenia (Jenipin) blue, is derived from the flowers of an evergreen tree and is set to be used in various products, including sports drinks, flavored water, fruit beverages, tea, and both hard and soft candies.

FDA Commissioner Marty McCurry highlighted the urgency behind this decision, stating that it reflects a serious intent to move away from synthetic dyes that are petroleum-based. He emphasized that by expanding the palette of natural colors, food manufacturers will have a greater variety of options to replace synthetic dyes.

Earlier this May, the FDA had approved three other natural food dyes: Gardière Extract Blue, Butterfly Flower Extract, and Calcium Phosphate, which can be used in a range of products from chips to frozen desserts.

The MAHA Initiative, which began in April, has seen about 40% of the food industry, including large companies like General Mills, Hershey, and Kraft Heinz, committing to the removal of chemical food dyes from their offerings.

On the same day, the FDA recommended that manufacturers speed up the phase-out of Red 3 from food products. The agency believes that this would aid its goal of improving public health.

The Consumer Brands Association also announced a plan to eliminate artificial colorings from products available in public schools by the 2026-2027 school year. The President and CEO of the organization noted that while these ingredients have been deemed safe, consumer preferences are shifting, prompting the industry to adapt.

Additionally, several states, including California, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia, have either introduced or passed legislation aimed at reducing the use of certain food dyes.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Secretary of Health and Human Services, remarked on the FDA’s approval of Gardenia Blue, suggesting it marks an important step towards prioritizing children’s health. He commended the decisive action being taken to promote better health standards within the industry.
