Sibling of Idaho slay victim reveals last messages from his tragic brother

The sisters of the University of Idaho students, who were tragically murdered by Brian Kohberger, shared the last message they received from their brother just hours before he was killed.

Mazzy Chapin recounted feeling it was “odd” when her 20-year-old brother Ethan texted her saying, “I love you,” after they attended a sorority event together the night before the tragedy.

The brothers, including Ethan and his triplet Hunter, had planned to go out to Soward on November 12, 2022, at 9 PM. However, Mazzy decided to continue on to Ethan and Hunter’s apartment, as noted by Fox News in connection with the new Amazon Prime Docuseries, “One Night in Idaho: College Murder.”

“For whatever reason, I stayed and fell asleep,” Mazzy explained. “Ethan kept messaging me, ‘Migy, please hang out.’ I ended up falling asleep without saying ‘I love you’ back.”

Mazzy also mentioned that she didn’t have a formal date, so she asked her brother to join her. “I usually don’t invite anyone to formal,” she said. “But since some of Ethan’s friends were going and he wasn’t, I thought, ‘Alright, you can be my date.’ We had a great time.”

The following morning, Ethan was murdered in Moscow, Idaho, along with his girlfriend, Zana Kernodle, and two of her roommates. Kohberger, 30, later pleaded guilty to the murders on July 2, receiving four life sentences and a possible additional ten years.

As a doctoral student in criminology at Washington State University, Kohberger initially maintained his innocence but ultimately accepted a plea deal that allowed him to avoid a jury trial set for August. This deal also spared him the possibility of a death sentence.

While some families of the victims have expressed their discontent with the plea agreement, particularly the Goncalves family, Ethan’s family voiced their support for it. Ethan’s father, Jim Chapin, shared his relief during an NBC interview, stating that the family was eager to move forward now that the Kohberger case was resolved.

“The kids are ready to move on,” Jim noted, while his wife, Stacey, mentioned how the burden of a possible trial was no longer looming over them.

Kohberger is set to be sentenced on July 23rd.
