Rand Paul Calls for Investigation into Fauci
Senator Rand Paul from Kentucky is pursuing a lengthy initiative urging the Justice Department to investigate Dr. Anthony Fauci on accusations of providing false testimony to Congress. This comes even after former President Joe Biden’s preemptive pardon.
Paul, a Republican, asserts that Fauci misled lawmakers regarding the US-funded coronavirus research in Wuhan, China. The push for the investigation comes alongside new revelations about Biden’s administration using an autopen for pardon documentation.
On social media, Paul stated, “Today, I’m reissuing the crime introduction concerning Anthony Fauci! Perjury is a serious offense, and individuals must be held accountable.”
While a presidential pardon cannot be revoked once issued, Paul believes it’s improbable that a court would undo Biden’s decision. He remarked that Biden had issued pardons to multiple former officials as he left the White House.
Paul’s renewed effort follows an investigative piece by the New York Times, which indicated that Biden had not signed off on every name that received a pardon.
Additionally, emails shared by the Times revealed that then-White House Principal Jeff Zients approved the use of the autopen and that Secretary Stephanie Feldman was responsible for its operation, reportedly under a verbal directive from Biden.
Former President Trump has raised concerns about the legitimacy of documents signed by Biden through auto-pen.
Since May 2021, Kentucky Republicans have consistently called for a federal inquiry into Fauci’s testimony regarding US grants for gain-of-function research related to Wuhan Labs. This type of research involves risky experiments intended to enhance the virulence of viruses.
During a Senate hearing, Fauci claimed that the National Institutes of Health did not fund gain-of-function research at the Wuhan Institute. However, in 2023, leaked emails suggested that Fauci was aware of such research being conducted at the laboratory. Subsequently, a congressional panel found that Fauci’s statements may have been misleading.
Following the May hearing, Paul again attempted to press Fauci on his statements regarding gain-of-function research, but Fauci stood his ground.
Providing false testimony to Congress can lead to severe penalties, including imprisonment of up to five years and substantial fines.
Fauci maintains that the funded study did not gain function and was conducted by qualified staff. However, the issue becomes complex due to differing opinions among scientists regarding what qualifies as gain-of-function research.
Wuhan is known for being the origin of the earliest Covid-19 cases and is also home to the Wuhan Institute of Virology, which studies coronaviruses.
Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, Fauci and Paul had several heated exchanges during Senate hearings. Fauci officially departed from his role as the chief advisor at the end of 2022.
This report has sought comments from Fauci’s legal representatives as well as additional information from Paul’s office.
