Florida’s University System Adopts New Accreditation Model

On Friday, the Florida university system gained approval for a new accreditation model aimed at reforming higher education. Governor Ron DeSantis celebrated this achievement as a significant step forward.

A collaborative effort known as the Public Higher Education Board has been established, comprising six public universities from Florida, Texas, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. This board’s goal is to create an innovative accreditation framework. According to a board spokesperson, this will streamline accreditation standards while emphasizing student outcomes.

During a press conference at Florida Atlantic University, DeSantis emphasized the necessity of what he referred to as “alternative certification.” He expressed concern that accrediting bodies were enforcing standards that many universities could not align with state laws. It raises questions about whether universities might compromise their compliance with these accreditors.

“What we’ve seen is an accreditation cartel where everyone seems to follow the same tune,” DeSantis remarked, indicating the need for this new direction in Florida’s education system.

Earlier in June, Florida’s Education Department highlighted previous issues faced by accrediting organizations and mentioned that an executive order from President Donald Trump had called for reform and accountability in the higher education accreditation process. This order pointed out that some accreditation bodies had been criticized for misusing their significant authority.

DeSantis revealed that those involved in this newly formed accreditation body are collaborating with the Department of Education, striving to secure federal approval. “The business plan outlines our mission and goals,” a spokesman noted, indicating readiness to meet federal standards.

The Education Department has yet to provide a response regarding this newly approved accreditation process.
