Former TSU Football Star Fatally Shot in Houston
A former football player from Texas Southern University was killed in a shooting incident that occurred during a dispute in a parking garage at an apartment complex in Houston.
Houston police responded to the call about the shooting at the MAC 4660 apartments, located approximately a mile from TSU, around 8:15 PM on Friday. Upon arrival, they found the 24-year-old victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Efforts by the Houston Fire Department to revive him were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead at the scene, as reported by Amber Khan Chut.
The victim, Tyler Martinez, previously played as a defensive tackle for the TSU football team. Reports indicate that he got into a physical altercation in the parking garage with a 22-year-old named Isaac Jasper Robinson, which escalated into a fatal confrontation.
During the fight, Martinez had Robinson pinned down, but he got up and attempted to walk away when Robinson’s female companion retrieved a firearm from a car and handed it to him. An eyewitness stated that Robinson then fired multiple shots at Martinez, hitting him three times in total.
Authorities noted that Robinson, a sophomore at Texas Southern University, initially fled the scene but later returned and admitted to the shooting. Interestingly, they both lived in the same apartment complex.
Robinson was arrested at the scene, charged with first-degree murder, and taken to Harris County Jail. He made his first court appearance on Saturday, where prosecutors sought a bond of $250,000.
Robinson’s defense attorney argued for a $75,000 bond, mentioning that his client had no prior criminal record and was employed with a local security company. After evaluating the situation, Judge Veronica M. Nelson ultimately set Robinson’s bond at $150,000, with conditions including a curfew from 9 PM to 6 AM, GPS monitoring, and a prohibition on weapons, drugs, and alcohol.
Robinson’s next court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday, according to documents filed with the court.
Tyler Martinez, a Houston native, had a notable college football career, participating in four seasons with the TSU Tigers from 2019 to 2023 after excelling at Humble High School. Under coach Clarence McKinney, he recorded 57 tackles, four sacks, and five tackles for loss over the course of 20 games in college.
