Cuomo Continues Mayoral Bid Despite Primary Loss
Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo isn’t backing down after his defeat in the mayoral primary to democratic socialist Zoran Mamdani. He believes that the rise of such opponents threatens the city’s future.
In a recent interview, Cuomo acknowledged his mistakes from the primary race, asserting that he is still the strongest candidate against any Democratic nominee. He warned that if democratic socialists aren’t defeated, New York City could face dire consequences.
Cuomo criticized Mamdani’s anti-Israel stance and socialist policies, claiming they pose a significant risk to the city. “This will mean the death of New York City,” he stated.
Cuomo and Adams Spar Over Mayoral Race
Despite losing the primary by a considerable margin, Cuomo is now running as an independent candidate. His competition includes current Mayor Eric Adams, independent candidate Jim Walden, and Republican Curtis Sliwa.
“Only 13% of New Yorkers showed up for the primary election,” Cuomo pointed out in a video shared on social media. “The general election is set for November, and I’m here to win.” He accused Mamdani of offering catchy slogans without real solutions.
Reflecting on his previous campaign, Cuomo conceded he had not been as assertive as he should have been. “People told me I wasn’t aggressive enough—it’s ironic, really,” he remarked, admitting that it was a mistake he plans not to repeat.
Mamdani’s Policies Under Scrutiny
Despite the setback, Cuomo sees polling data suggesting he could still be a formidable challenger to Mamdani in the upcoming general election. He noted that while Mamdani has a talent for connecting with voters, his solutions for the city’s challenges fall flat.
Cuomo particularly criticized Mamdani’s housing policy, suggesting that it lacks substance. “There just isn’t a real answer there,” he said, specifically mentioning concerns over Mamdani’s Rent Freeze Policy and its potential impact on affordable housing.
“It may not be glamorous, but it’s the truth,” Cuomo concluded. As of now, Mamdani’s team has not responded to requests for comment regarding these claims.
