Bipartisan Senate duo commends the White House's position on Russia

A bipartisan pair of senators is pushing for stringent sanctions against Russia, aiming to provide President Donald Trump with more options following his recent stern stance on Moscow.

Senators Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) have been advocating for strict measures against Russia and its energy trade partners. They’ve been working to revise their proposal to align it more closely with the White House’s requests, which could grant Trump greater leeway.

The bill has taken a back seat to efforts by Congressional Republicans focused on pushing through Trump’s major legislative agenda, but it seems to be gaining traction as a potential vote approaches at the end of the month.

However, the situation hinges largely on whether Russian President Vladimir Putin will agree to cease hostilities in Ukraine. Trump’s announcement regarding 100% tariffs on Moscow has put a damper on the plan, although the bipartisan duo isn’t expressing frustration over it.

Senate Majority Leader John Tune (R-D.) mentioned, “It appears the president is trying to handle this independently. If he finds it beneficial, we’re ready to support whatever steps he chooses to take.”

The president’s stern warnings came in the wake of his decision to supply weapons to NATO allies.

Graham expressed optimism about the administration’s approach, stating they’re prepared to assist the president with the necessary congressional tools.

The proposed legislation would impose tariffs as high as 500% on nations buying energy from Russia, aiming to cripple its military capabilities by restricting exports of gas, uranium, and more. This move particularly targets China and India, which account for a significant chunk of Russia’s energy sales.

Despite potential hurdles, Graham insisted that progress on the bill is ongoing. He noted that garnering Congressional support is beneficial for the president from both legal and political perspectives.

“With weapons and sanctions on the agenda, I believe we might finally have the change we’ve been seeking,” he remarked.

Blumenthal also endorsed Trump’s shift, noting the bipartisan bill, backed by numerous co-sponsors, could have substantial impact. He likened the initiative to a “sledgehammer,” emphasizing its potential effectiveness against Moscow’s aggression.
