The disagreement between Newsom and Trump escalates regarding immigration enforcement in Los Angeles.

California Governor Gavin Newsom reignited his ongoing conflict with President Donald Trump during a podcast on Monday. He criticized Trump, calling him disrespectful for his recent immigration actions in Los Angeles.

Newsom expressed concern about the impact of these actions, recounting instances of mounted officers with American flags disrupting children’s soccer games in the summer. He described this as a “weakness disguised as strength,” adding, “That’s what bothers me about this situation,” though he acknowledged Trump is the president.

On another note, Trump had previously mocked Newsom during a public event, referencing a derogatory nickname he claimed he used in seventh grade: “News Come.” Newsom responded, questioning how he should explain this to his child, reflecting on the absurdity of being insulted by someone who is nearly 80, contrasting it with his own childhood experiences.

The White House retaliated, suggesting Newsom should appreciate that Trump is “protecting Californians,” pointing out that Newsom has often failed to take similar actions himself. A spokesperson criticized Democrats for using harsh language to deflect from what they perceive as inadequate policies.

The tensions between Newsom and Trump have been building since Trump’s first term, particularly regarding the management of wildfires in the Los Angeles area and other political disagreements. Recently, the clashes intensified during protests against immigration raids, which included severe violence, such as looting and attacks on law enforcement.

After the riots escalated, Trump announced he would send 2,000 National Guard troops to restore order without needing the governor’s approval. In response, California filed a lawsuit to try to maintain control over its State Guard.

With the riots continuing, criticisms arose targeting Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, with accusations that their actions were irresponsible. The unrest reached a peak following protests against the immigration operations in early June, drawing national attention.

Finally, a district judge recently issued a temporary restraining order against immigration enforcement actions in the Central District of California without reasonable suspicion. This led the Trump administration to seek a suspension of the order, illustrating the ongoing legal battles over enforcement policies in the state.
