Stephen A. Smith Considers Presidential Bid

Sports commentator Stephen A. Smith mentioned on Monday that he might contemplate a political career, specifically running for president.

During an appearance on “The Late Show,” Stephen Colbert asked, “Do you want to start as President of the United States?” to which Smith responded, “Why not?”

With over 20 years of experience as a sports commentator, including several contracts with ESPN, Smith is not new to the public eye. Yet, he’s recently garnered attention for his podcasts, which provide sharp critiques of both major political parties.

“I’m registered as independent. I’m not fond of either party,” Smith noted, expressing frustration with how both sides compel American citizens to adopt biased views. He told Colbert that many issues arise because politicians often ignore pressing policies in favor of party loyalty.

“It’s as if you only need to disagree with the other side. You don’t even have to understand the bill or focus on the problem. It’s all about how to vote against them,” he said. “This polarization is frustrating. I really detest it. I find myself saying this over and over.”

His statements come just months before the 2026 midterm elections and three years prior to the next presidential election. Smith also elaborated on President Trump’s influence, sharing that many politicians appear to feel pressure from him.

“Trump has them wrapped around his finger. Why? Because he can change the game with a snap. They’re aware of this power and prefer to be career politicians rather than take decisive action,” he said.

“His popularity and connection with the public matter. I believe I can achieve that kind of resonance too. It’s not complex,” he added.

In April, Smith had hinted at the possibility of a presidential run, saying he would “consider” the idea.
