The leader of a Glenn Beck nonprofit focused on helping Texas flood victims described the federal and state disaster response as impressive, countering some Democratic criticisms.
JP Decker, the executive director of Mercury One, talked on a radio show with Glenn Beck, co-founder of Blaze Media. He emphasized that federal efforts were in sync with what states need during disasters.
“The administration’s response has really enabled us to assist them in the longer run,” he mentioned.
Reflecting on his initial communications, Beck recalled asking Decker about the situation during the flood and how they aimed to support the efforts without interfering.
Decker explained, “We focused on feeding people while allowing search and rescue to take precedence.” He described his experiences on the ground, saying the tragedy was “terrifying.”
The charity is aiding a small town where many homes were severely impacted. “In one area alone, around 26 homes were heavily damaged, and we’re helping with rebuilding efforts,” he shared. Tragically, just a day before, nearby search teams had discovered two adults and a nine-month-old child.
Decker also reflected on the resilience of the local community: “Everyone kept saying, ‘We’re Texans; we’ll get through this.'” He added that this disaster was unlike anything many had experienced before, but the administration’s response made a real difference.
When Beck asked about the involvement of both state and federal resources, Decker confirmed the immediate deployment of the National Guard and the Coast Guard.
He remarked, “It’s encouraging to see the administration stepping up.”
Decker further revealed that Mercury One has been involved in supporting flood victims for a considerable time and many are without flood insurance, necessitating help for rebuilding.
As of now, the disaster has claimed 132 confirmed lives, with many still missing.
“It’s truly astonishing,” Beck commented.
Decker expressed gratitude for the response from Beck’s audience to support their relief efforts, highlighting a challenge to raise $1 million, which they managed to achieve in just 48 hours.
With visible pride, Beck stated, “I’m really proud of Mercury and what you have built.” Decker also provided an update on ongoing relief work following Hurricane Helen in North Carolina, mentioning that they have nearly rebuilt 150 homes and aim to exceed 400 in the coming two years.
