James Johnson Switches Commitment from Georgia to Texas
Five-star defensive lineman James Johnson made headlines on Tuesday by changing his commitment from Georgia to Texas, marking a significant moment in the SEC landscape.
The top defensive prospect in the country will now be part of the Longhorns’ 2026 recruiting class. Interestingly, this decision comes just 25 weeks after he initially chose Georgia.
Johnson, standing 6-foot-2 and weighing 285 pounds, expressed that this change of heart stemmed from a realization about where he truly belongs. “I didn’t really notice what was missing until I committed to Georgia,” he said. “Even though I have a lot of respect for their program and staff, it didn’t feel like home for me. This clarity helped me see that Texas is where my heart is, and that’s where I thrive both on and off the field.”
Initially, he had committed to Georgia after considering other schools like Florida and Miami for his top four choices.
Ranked as the 10th best player nationally, Johnson highlighted the coaching staff as a crucial reason for his flip. Texas defensive line coach Kenny Baker, who joined the program in 2024 and has NFL experience, played a significant role in his decision. Johnson appreciated Baker’s coaching style, noting, “I love how he teaches. He makes learning easy, and he has a good track record of developing great players.”
Interestingly, Johnson wasn’t the only five-star recruit to commit to Texas that day. Linebacker Tyler Atkinson from Georgia also chose the Longhorns over offers from Georgia and Oregon. Atkinson is recognized as the top linebacker in his class.
Currently, Texas is in the running for five five-star recruits for the 2026 class, with Alabama being their only notable competitor.
Reflecting on Texas’s program, Johnson added, “They’re doing something big. Coach Sark is building a top-tier program. They’ve shown they know how to recruit, win games, and develop players in Texas.”
This upcoming season, Johnson will play for Miami Northwestern High School, a team currently under scrutiny due to an investigation involving their head coach, Teddy Bridgewater, a former NFL quarterback. Despite the controversy, the team recently secured the Class 3A Championship in Florida, showcasing their talent, including fellow five-star recruit Calvin Russell.
