Comer criticizes NBC article linking his digital signature to Biden's autopen usage

Rep. James Comer, R-KY, who heads the House Oversight Committee, criticized NBC News on Tuesday over a report linking the network and its journalists to the Biden administration’s use of autopens and digital signatures. The report by NBC’s Ryan Nobles and Melanie Zanona detailed ongoing investigations into President Joe Biden’s usage of the autopen, revealing that investigations and subpoenas were issued during this process.

The report noted, “He sent 16 letters to former Biden White House officials demanding that they agree to a transcribed interview.” Interestingly, the metadata of these letters indicated that Comer’s signature was actually a digital image included in the documents.

Many, including Comer himself, perceive this story as an attempt to obscure the allegations regarding a cover-up related to Biden’s mental fitness during his presidency.

In response, Comer tweeted, “There’s still time to remove this, Ryan,” along with a modified image of Nobles’ report on NBC News Live. He has continued to express his criticism on social media, labeling NBC as “Fake News” and “Democrat Propaganda.”

In a statement to Fox News Digital, he stated, “Obviously, fake news NBC is where journalism dies and Democratic propaganda flourishes. We are caught up in one of the biggest scandals in American history. The fact that NBC hacks can’t distinguish between the legitimate use of digital signatures and the fraudulent use of autopens reveals everything you need to know.”

Meanwhile, other users on social media compared the situation to “apples and oranges,” suggesting that the media’s focus on Biden’s signing practices was exaggerated. One commenter remarked that the real issue isn’t purely the use of the autopen but whether Biden was aware of whom he was pardoning, questioning whether the scandal warranted such media attention.

Conservative commentator Steve Guest emphasized, “The fact that NBC News doesn’t recognize this as an apples-to-oranges comparison is a significant problem. It’s not journalism; it’s a blatant attempt to obscure facts related to the Democrats.”

T. Becket Adams, from the National Journalism Center, humorously questioned how the media failed to report on Biden’s cognitive challenges, adding that journalists aren’t morally required to publicize every item introduced by the Democratic office.

Republicans have criticized the Biden administration’s autopen usage for various executive actions, especially concerning concerns about Biden’s mental state. Comer and others allege that staff may be issuing orders without Biden’s full awareness.

Another instance cited involved Biden’s recognition of significant acts of clemency, which were characterized as the largest amnesty by a sitting president.

In a recent interview with the New York Times, Biden defended using an autopen, claiming he “made all the decisions” himself. However, the report highlighted that he did not individually approve every name for the amnesty, suggesting that his staff used the autopen for the final document without fully engaging the President at each step.
