A drinker's chilling perspective: The unsettling reality behind the term 'spirit' for alcohol

The Connection Between Alcohol and Mental Confusion

Have you ever noticed the odd link between calling alcohol “spirits” and its ability to create mental chaos in our lives? It’s a curious thought, right? Rick Burgess, the host of “Strange Encounters,” dives into this topic in a recent episode, suggesting that perhaps you should consider this connection more deeply.

In this episode, Rick reads a letter from a listener grappling with alcoholism and the mental struggles that accompany it. The writer, who remains anonymous, reflects on his upbringing in a Southern Baptist household where alcohol was prevalent due to family history.

“I became depressed and relied on alcohol for help,” Rick reads from the letter. The writer shares that his drinking started casually—just “a glass of wine here and there”—but quickly escalated into a near-constant habit.

As his drinking intensified, he began to perceive odd phenomena around him. “I started to hear things, see things, and eventually communicated with entities that were invisible to everyone else,” he described. His self-reflection on this experience was, as he puts it, “terrifying.” Yet, even when he tried to quit drinking, the situation worsened.

In a moment of poor judgment, he drove to a family beach house in Florida while intoxicated. “I felt a presence in the car that can only be described as a cloud,” he wrote. While staying at the beach house before, he had felt safe, but this time, he was haunted by this ominous cloud.

Overwhelmed with fear, he reached out to his family for help. They supported him, but the cloud remained. On the eve of his treatment, he reported that it “started moving around the room” and even “growled.” “I sensed it was offended by my actions,” he mused, noting that family members witnessed him conversing with this entity in an incomprehensible tongue.

The next day, he went to a detox center, where he found himself isolated in a plain room. “The only familiar thing was the lingering cloud. All I could do was cry and pray,” he recounted. At some point, amid his tears, he asked, “Are you ready to listen to me?”

That’s when he felt he heard a voice from God, guiding him during his darkest moments. Now, he shares his journey as a warning to others about the dangers of alcohol, declaring he has no intention of returning to that “poison.”

After finishing the letter, Rick expressed his amazement, saying, “This is exactly what the devil wants—something to distort your mind.” He referenced Ephesians 5:18, which cautions against drunkenness, and echoed Peter’s advice from 1 Peter 5:8 to remain vigilant, noting that adversaries are always lurking.

Reflecting on his own past with alcohol, Rick shared, “I’d say a lot of my darker actions stemmed from allowing substances to alter my thinking.” He emphasized that yielding to drugs or alcohol is essentially an invitation for manipulation.

If you’re interested in more of Rick’s insights, he invites listeners to dive into the full episode. It’s certainly a conversation worth engaging with.
