Attempted Assassination at WHCD

An individual with strong leftist views and notable mental health issues attempted to assassinate President Trump and his administration during the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on Saturday night. Remarkably, corporate media has spun this foiled plot into a narrative about an attack on journalism, the First Amendment, and democracy itself.

The suspect, 31-year-old Cole Allen, reportedly tried to bypass the limited security at the event held at the Washington Hilton before law enforcement intervened and arrested him. Prior to the incident, he sent an anti-Trump manifesto to his family, in which he described the president using derogatory terms.

It was almost predictable that members of the media would react in a dramatically self-focused manner. During a CNN segment, host Brian Stelter expressed concern over the “traumatic stress” that some attendees faced due to the lockdown.

On CNN’s website, reporter Stephen Collinson characterized the assassination attempt as a threat to the “rituals that define US democracy.” He noted that the sense of danger felt by those in power, as well as those tasked with holding them accountable, shows how violence—historically commonplace in the US—has become more prevalent today. Collinson cited worries that fundamental democratic practices like free expression and public discourse may struggle under increased security pressures.

In an urgent editorial, The Free Press declared, “The American Way Of Life Is Under Fire,” asserting that not only was the assassination attempt a danger to President Trump and his administration, it also represented an assault on the nation’s free press.

The editorial continued, highlighting how each violent act raises the risks associated with participating in American public life. This shifting landscape is felt in canceled speeches, candidates opting out of running for office, officials needing military protection, and journalists self-censoring due to fear.

The editorial concluded with a compelling call to action, insisting that the dinner should be rescheduled in a way that upholds democratic principles.

It’s striking to think that this so-called “nerd prom” needs to continue, as if it’s somehow a cornerstone of American life. Many outside Washington may not share this intense concern, viewing an assassination attempt more seriously than a gala for the press. From my perspective, even from a distance, life in America seems to be moving along just fine.
