New Emergency Messaging Device: Flipper One

Imagine a situation where the internet is down, and cell towers are damaged, leaving you unable to reach someone during an emergency. What’s your move?

Interestingly, the solution might remind you of the two-way texting tech from the mid-2000s, but it has a rather unsettling twist.

Back in the day, when celebrities like Paris Hilton and bands like Blink-182 were promoting the T-Mobile Sidekick, texting was, well, a pretty straightforward affair. It was a time when the novelty of typing messages without jamming the same button repeatedly was enough to impress many.

Fast forward to today, and we see an unexpectedly simple yet innovative alternative to our dependence on Wi-Fi and cellular networks: the Flipper One, touted as an “off-grid radio messenger.”

A video shared on X shows the Flipper One, which sends public messages through repeater nodes. This technology is akin to the ones used to enable radio signals for emergency communications.

Tests conducted in the U.K. demonstrated that it can send messages nearly 100 miles. But there’s a catch: it operates on a network usually associated with hackers.

According to its website, Flipper One is described as “a community-driven project aimed at creating a portable Linux multi-tool for hackers.” It’s essentially a working prototype that’s yet to hit the market, succeeding the Flipper Zero. The original device became popular online due to its capabilities for hacking RFID and infrared signals, leading to numerous videos showcasing individuals breaching key fobs and corporate networks.

Flipper One is touted as an upgrade: it can access both Wi-Fi and 5G networks and features a satellite modem. And honestly, the spookiness of it all is noteworthy.

The creators of Flipper wrote on X that “the network operates independently of the internet, requires no radio transmission license, and is free to use.” It may well be a smart choice for maintaining texting capabilities when traditional internet services are unavailable.

Using the MeshCore network, specifically developed for off-grid communication, the Flipper One doesn’t need an internet connection or cellular service. It can encrypt messages and even transmit its location if needed.

Although messages transmitted on radio frequencies are still detectable, users can secure their communications using randomly generated key-codes when using a private channel.

So, while the simplistic idea of texting calls to mind the nostalgic Motorola days, for many, the Flipper One is stepping into largely uncharted territory.

There are applications designed to utilize the MeshCore system, providing access to messaging services across various platforms. Additionally, there exists similar messaging technology via the Meshstatic network, which, unlike MeshCore, relies on user devices for relaying messages rather than dedicated infrastructure.
